The W.E. (works everywhere) Phone or also called a FreeRunner Open Source mobile phone is a product to be launched by distributors – such as Koolu – in the Americas, India and the EU. Koolu is a Canadian leading provider of environmentally friendly client solutions based on free and open source Linux software.

A touch screen smart phone, the Openmoko Neo FreeRunner is an open-source device which allows room for further software tweaking. As such it is first to be rolled out to developers, thereafter the phone in conjunction with Google Applications will be introduced in Koolu’s case via a referral program.

The phone benefits from a so-called “Free and Open Source Software” or FOSS which brings flexibility and represents a playground to system administrators who can customize the device for employees whilst gazetteers can improve their knowledge of handset software design.

This tri-band GSM Wi-Fi enabled phone weighs 185 grams, comes with a GPS and offers free VoIP calls. It features a 2.8” 480 x 640 VGA touchscreen, two 3-axis motion sensors like the iPhone, 128MB WSDRAM and 256MB NAND Flash.

Openmoko Neo FreeRunner sells for $399.00 in the U.S. and is expected to be launched in October in the UK. The company will announce availability in other regions of the world at LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco, August 5-7, 2008
